Is this relationship karmic?

You met, and within a week it felt as if you had known each other for years. Or you cannot leave, although every friend says you should. People call both of these "karmic". What does the word actually mean in a birth chart, and how can an astrologer tell?

What "karmic" means here

In karmic astrology a relationship is called karmic when the two charts show that the two people came into this life with something unfinished between them: a lesson that is easier to learn together, a debt in one direction, or a pattern that both of them keep repeating. It does not mean "destined to last", and it does not mean "doomed". It means "not accidental". Most strong relationships have a karmic layer. The question is what that layer asks of you.

What Mónika looks at

She reads each chart on its own first, because a relationship cannot be understood without the two people in it. Then she places the charts side by side, which astrologers call synastry, and looks for the contacts that carry weight in this tradition:

• The lunar nodes. When one person's planets sit on the other's north or south node, the relationship is tied to the direction of that person's life. South node contacts feel instantly familiar; north node contacts feel like a stretch, and often a necessary one.
• Saturn. Saturn between two charts gives the relationship structure, duty and, sometimes, a heavy feeling. It is the mark of a relationship that is meant to teach something and to last long enough to teach it.
• Chiron and Lilith. Chiron shows where the two of you touch an old wound in each other; Lilith shows what was pushed away and returns in the relationship.
• The eclipses before each birth. They set the background theme of each life, and sometimes the two themes answer each other.

An example of how it reads

Imagine two charts in which her Saturn sits exactly on his Moon. He feels safe with her and, at the same time, judged; she feels responsible for him and, at the same time, tired. Add his Venus on her south node: the attraction was immediate, the feeling of "I know you" strong. A karmic reading would not say "stay" or "leave". It would say: this relationship repeats a pattern of care that becomes control, and the lesson for both is to stay close without one of them carrying the other. That is a different conversation from "is it meant to be".
